Surrey wrap up emphatic County Championship victory over Notts

Surrey wrapped up just their second win of the season in the Specsavers County Championship Division One with Amar Virdi spinning them to a 167-run victory over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

After resuming on the third day on 184-7, the defending champions declared on 224-9 with Jordan Clark taking his score to 54 and Gareth Batty making 29.

That set bottom-of-the-table Notts, who were bowled out for only 116 in their first innings, a target of 349, but it proved well beyond them as they were dismissed for 181 the second time around.

Virdi took 6-78 to add to his 8-61 in the first innings as the home batsmen struggled against his loopy, well-flighted off-spin, while Batty claimed 3-62.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who finished with match figures of 12-144 himself, top-scored for Notts with an unbeaten 66, while Stuart Broad, who did not bowl a single delivery in Surrey's second innings despite being fit to do so, made a late 30.

Surrey picked up 20 points to move 57 points clear of their opponents, who remain marooned at the bottom.

Keshav Maharaj completed a superb seven-wicket haul as Yorkshire made Division One leaders Somerset follow on 324 runs behind after lunch on day three at Headingley to put themselves on course for an impressive victory.

In the face of the hosts' first-innings 520, Somerset advanced from 76-4 overnight to 196 all out, with South African Test left-arm spinner Maharaj finishing with 7-52 from 26.3 overs, while Jamie Overton led the way for the visitors with a season's best 52 not out.

Somerset then closed on 159-4 in their second knock with Maharaj taking 2-35 as Tom Banton ended the day unbeaten on 58. SCORECARD

Liam Banks dug himself in as Warwickshire set about batting out a minimum of 121 overs to prevent a heavy defeat against Essex at Chelmsford.

Banks, 20, was 36 not out from 66 balls at the end of day three as the visitors reached 67-1 in their pursuit of 401 to record their third victory of the season, although the hosts look more likely to take another nine wickets for a seventh win in eight games that would probably take them to the top of the table.

Essex essentially put the match beyond Warwickshire's reach with an eighth-wicket stand of 84 between Dan Lawrence (74) and Simon Harmer (43) that lifted them to 316-9 declared after Alastair Cook had laid the foundations with 83. SCORECARD

Kent gave themselves a sniff of victory on day three against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl as Darren Stevens and Heino Kuhn added half-centuries to Joe Denly's 154.

Stevens, 43, crashed 60 to add to his first-innings five-for, while captain Kuhn fell five runs short of his first century of the season as the visitors were bowled out for 555, to lead by 146, after resuming on 319-3.

Hampshire whittled their deficit down to 27 as they closed on 119-2, but lost day-one centurion Felix Organ (3) and Ajinkya Rahane (42) in the evening session. SCORECARD

Division Two leaders Lancashire secured their fifth win of the season as they beat Sussex by an innings and 51 runs on the third day at Old Trafford.

After being forced to follow on, the visitors resumed on 15-0 in their second innings but slumped to 117-5 before an exhilarating sixth-wicket stand of 128 between Delray Rawlins, who struck his maiden first-class century as he made 100 off 100 balls, and David Wiese, who hit 77 from 73 deliveries.

However, Matt Parkinson, who took 4-142 for career-best match figures of 10-165, removed them both before combining with Richard Gleeson (3-62) and Graham Onions (3-18) to polish off the tail and dismiss Sussex for 316. SCORECARD | TABLE

Durham require seven wickets on the final day to defeat Worcestershire at Emirates Riverside after reducing the visitors to 31-3 in their second innings.

The home side were able to build a match-winning position on day three as they declared on 290-8, with Jack Burnham providing the backbone of the innings with 76. Ed Barnard claimed four wickets for the second time in the match, but he was powerless to prevent Durham setting a daunting total of 352.

Chris Rushworth tore through the Worcestershire top order in the final hour, reducing the visitors to 11-3 as he claimed 3-4 from seven overs before Callum Ferguson (15no) and Ross Whiteley (14no) dug in. SCORECARD

Middlesex are on the brink of claiming their third victory of the season after the third day of their clash with Glamorgan in Cardiff.

The visitors need to take only four more wickets on Tuesday after the hosts, who went into the match unbeaten, closed on 171-6 after being set an unlikely victory target of 556.

Middlesex had earlier been dismissed for 342 in their second innings with opener Sam Robson carrying his bat for 140 not out from 224 balls after late stands of 75 with Tom Helm (38) and 76 with Tim Murtagh (33).

Marnus Labuschagne (51) and Charlie Hemphrey (52no) put on 97 for the second wicket for Glamorgan, but the former's dismissal sparked a middle-order collapse from 106-1. SCORECARD

An astonishing 24 wickets fell on day two to leave Derbyshire's clash with Northamptonshire at Chesterfield firmly in the balance.

Derbyshire, who resumed on 34-1 after Northants' first innings 342, fell to 146 all out as Ben Sanderson took 5-46, with Fynn Hudson-Prentice unbeaten on 55.

But Tony Palladino then claimed 4-33 as the visitors were shot out for 122 to leave the hosts chasing 319 for victory. By the close, they were 155-5, still 164 runs short of the target, with Tom Lace unbeaten on 34. SCORECARD

Matt Taylor and Ethan Bamber led the way with three wickets apiece as Gloucestershire bowled out Leicestershire for 252 on the opening day of their match at Cheltenham.

Left-arm seamer Taylor returned 3-39 from 18 overs and debutant Bamber, who signed on loan from Middlesex on Sunday, 3-53 from 22.3 overs after the visitors had won the toss and elected to bat.
