Alastair Cook made 71 in his final Test match before India took six wickets in the evening session to claim the upper hand after day one at The Oval.
Click play on the video above to watch the best of the action as India hit back strongly to reduce England to 198-7 at stumps on day one.
It was a testing afternoon for England's batsmen as India's bowlers begun to find their line and length, and Cook was given a second life as Ajinkya Rahane dropped him off Ishant Sharma on 17.
In the next over, Moeen Ali earned a reprieve too when Virat Kohli shelled a challenging chance to his left at third slip as the hosts' batsmen clung on with the ball swinging.
Though his scoring rate slowed, Cook brought up his fifty with a couple of runs down the ground to loud applause around the ground.
He moved to within 29 of a 33rd Test century after tea but if there is to be a dream finale to his illustrious career, it will have to wait until England's second innings as Cook dragged on to Jasprit Bumrah.
Joe Root (0) was lbw three balls later and Jonny Bairstow (0) fell in the next over as England went from 133-1 to 134-4.
Ben Stokes (11) and Sam Curran (0) also went cheaply with Ali's gritty knock of 50 ended too, before Jos Buttler (11no), despite a couple of very close calls, and Adil Rashid (4no) battled through to the close.
