Teenage spinner Mohammad Asghar has been added to the Pakistan squad for their Test series in Australia as cover for Yasir Shah.

Shah suffered a back injury during a training session and will be assessed by Pakistan's medical team ahead of the first Test in Brisbane, which starts on December 15.

Left-armer Asghar has emerged as a player to watch in Pakistan's domestic league this season, taking 68 wickets in 17 first-class matches since making his debut as a 15-year-old.

"Yasir is visibly improving but it's an important Test and we don't want to take a risk," a Pakistan team spokesman said.

"He basically suffered back spasms and is being taken care of with therapy. We are hoping to have him back. But it's always good to have back up to counter the worst case."
