Faf du Plessis will have an appeal against his ball-tampering sanction heard on December 19 in Dubai, the International Cricket Council has announced.

The South Africa captain was found guilty of applying an artificial substance - saliva produced by sucking a mint - to the ball in the second Test against Australia last month in Hobart and was fined 100 per cent of his match fee.

Du Plessis, 32, has maintained his innocence and after feeling aggrieved at the verdict decided to challenge it, although the ICC at the time expressed its disappointment at the decision to appeal.

A statement from the governing body read: "The ICC confirms the hearing date for Faf du Plessis' appeal will be Monday 19 December. Michael Beloff QC has been appointed judicial commissioner to hear the appeal.

"Legal counsel for both parties will attend in Dubai, whilst Mr Du Plessis will join via telephone."
