Durham needed just six balls on Sunday morning to complete a 10-wicket victory over Gloucestershire, promoting Matthew Potts from No 11 to open the chase and watching him hit the winning runs.
Bad light had halted play on Saturday with Durham needing only four after Gloucestershire were bowled out for 250 in their second innings, for a lead of three.
When the sides returned, Potts, who had batted last in Durham's first innings, dispatched the final ball of Ollie Price's over to seal the win and stretch the Division Two leaders' advantage to 40 points.
Northamptonshire and Kent, Durham's nearest pursuers, played out a draw in which the hosts held the upper hand.
Centuries from Ricardo Vasconcelos (119) and Nathan McSweeney (109) carried Northamptonshire to maximum batting points at 450-8 in reply to Kent's 345 all out.
Rain also accounted for the division's other fixtures, with Derbyshire against Middlesex and Worcestershire against Lancashire both ending in weather-affected draws.
All five Division One matches were drawn in a round heavily disrupted by the rain, leaving Nottinghamshire four points clear of Somerset at the top.
Nottinghamshire declared on 325-8 at Warwickshire after Joe Clarke's 150, and Olly Stone's 5-49 skittled the third-placed hosts for 185 to secure maximum bowling points before the weather closed in.
Somerset had to settle for a draw at Hove despite Tom Lammonby's 93 in a total of 350-9, Sussex closing on 62-1 after being set an unfeasible 303.
Ben Foakes made an unbeaten 120 to steer Surrey clear of danger against Essex at Chelmsford, adding crucial support from Tom Lawes' 44 at No 9 in a second-innings 298-8.
Glamorgan were rescued by the rain at 21-3 chasing 302 against bottom side Hampshire in Cardiff while no play was possible on the final day between Yorkshire and Leicestershire at Scarborough.
