Ajax fans descended on Leicester Square in central London on Tuesday ahead of their Champions League clash against Tottenham.

Hundreds of the Dutch club's fans gathered in the square, chanting and singing songs before kick-off in the semi-final first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

There was no sign of trouble during the afternoon despite the Metropolitan Police filing the fixture as a "high-risk" Category C game - one down from the highest level of "increased risk".

Police are to be deployed both inside and outside the stadium ahead of and during the match. No incidents had been reported to the Met as of 9.45am on Tuesday morning.

The force have described their operation as a "proportionate policing plan to ensure any instances of crime or disorder are responded to quickly and robustly".

Amsterdam Police were forced to use water cannons as supporters threw flares and missiles at officers ahead of their quarter-final home leg against Juventus last month.

Tottenham have reached the semi-finals for the first time in their history after beating Manchester City over two legs, while Ajax brushed aside Juventus, who knocked Spurs out in the last 16 last season.

Spurs will be without key players Harry Kane (injured) and Heung-Min Son (suspended) as they host a vibrant young Ajax team in their first Champions League semi-final since 1997.
