Prema's Nyck de Vries took his second F2 pole position of the season with a superb lap at the Russian GP in Sochi.
The McLaren junior was over two tenths clear of the rest of the field. Underling his performance, the Dutch driver was also 1.6 seconds quicker than his team-mate Sean Gelael.
2019 McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris got his Carlin onto the front row right at the end of the session, demoting championship rival George Russell to third.
It's the first time Norris has been on the front row since Austria and could be key in the title fight as he looks to overhaul a 22-point deficit to Russell.
Nicholas Latifi took fourth for his best qualifying result of the season, ahead of DAMS team-mate Alexander Albon.
The other British driver on the grid, Jack Aitken, was ninth quickest for ART.
It was a disappointing session for Russia's Artem Markelov. Mathematically still in the title fight, he was the slowest of the drivers to post a representative time.
Saturday's Feature Race is underway at 2:45pm BST and you can see delayed coverage of the race on Sky Sports F1 from 3:05pm.
