New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis has requested a trade, according to his agent Rich Paul.

Speculation has been circling as to whether Davis will sign a contract extension or leave the team but it now appears the 25-year-old wants to leave New Orleans, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Paul, who is also the agent of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, has stated Davis has no intention of signing the new contract.

"Anthony wants to be traded to a team that allows him the chance to win consistently and compete for a championship," Paul told ESPN.

"Anthony wanted to be honest and clear with his intentions and that's the reason for informing them of this decision now. That's in the best interest of both Anthony's and the organisation's future."

Davis, was drafted by the Pelicans in 2012 as the first overall pick.

He could sign a five year, $240m contract extension this summer and can then become a free agent in the summer of 2020.
