In depth

Verdict

The Elsworth yard has found form of late and Firestarter should give a solid account here. However, he's a colt with quirks and his latest effort was most disappointing when never a threat in the Convivial Stakes at York. Therefore, BIG JOHNNY D and Cryptic Choice make more appeal, having finished third and fourth in the Newmarket maiden won by Kinglet, the form of which looks strong after the subsequent success of the runner-up Much Improved. There may be little between the two, but the former created slightly the better impression and gets the vote. Interesting newcomers are also on show, of which Scrupul and Starboard make most appeal on paper. However, a market check is essential.
