Verdict

DICK TURPIN can reverse the 2,000 Guineas form with Makfi at a track that may bring the best out of him; the selection's stablemate Canford Cliffs is also a top-class performer and is rated as a bigger threat than Siyouni, who now has something to prove after a below-par effort in the French Guineas last month. With a record boasting seven of the last 10 winners, Aidan O'Brien has a stranglehold on this race so his Steinbeck has to be worth noting in the betting. The last named was behind Beethoven in last season's Dewhurst but holds far more scope for improvement. Quite whether he has enough to repel the selection is another matter, though. Makfi delivered on the promise of his breeding with a stylish effort at Newmarket in May - he won the Guineas fair and square and deserves his place as one of his generation's classiest milers. He comes here defending an unbeaten record and it is virtually assured that he will be involved at the finish. Canford Cliffs ran too freely at headquarters and did himself no favours as a result. However, he was blistering in the Irish Guineas, so it's not difficult to see why Richard Hughes has decided to keep faith with the son of Tagula. However, Ryan Moore also gets on very well with Dick Turpin and, as he coaxed him to get the better of his arguably now more illustrious stable companion in both the Greenham Stakes at Newbury in April and in the Guineas the following month, Dick Turpin's claims are set in stone for all to see. In summary: Dick Turpin is the value call, while Canford Cliffs and Makfi come into the reckoning for a combination forecast including the selection.
