In depth
Verdict
Emperor's Monarch and Ungaro have both shown enough to suggest that they can win races but may have to settle for a minor role today with preference for the Nicky Richards-trained Sergio Coimbra. The selection showed plenty of promise when a close third behind Witch Wind in a bumper here last month, when having stablemate Minnigaff well behind, and it is interesting that his trainer wastes no time in putting the six-year-old over hurdles. Ungaro is the obvious danger having shown decent form in bumpers prior to an encouraging first start over timber when outclassed behind Escompteur at Bangor. That was back in October though and Keith Reveley's gelding has not been sighted since then, which is of concern. French import Matmata de Tendron makes no obvious appeal on his British debut, while Kempski was well beaten when second here over 2m4f last time. Millerburn is another that is held by the selection on running last time and of more interest may be Emperor's Monarch. John Wade's team has been in good form of late and the six-year-old has run with promise but Sergio Coimbra is potentially useful and he gets the vote.
