Verdict

A maiden handicap is not the best betting medium, but Gouranga does look to have strong claims and is taken to lead home Phone in and Smart Gal. Henry Candy's three-year-old has shown a consistent level of form in maidens and handicaps this season and this looks her easiest task to date. Being by Robellino this slightly longer trip should suit and she should be there or thereabouts. Smart Gal caught the eye when a close up third behind the top class Snoqualmie Boy at Salisbury in May. She has since disappointed on two occasions, but if that first run of the season was her true ability she will be hard to beat. Phone In wasn't beaten far over course and distance last time and has to be considered for each-way purposes. Overlook may prove best of the low-weights, but we return to Gouranga as our idea of the winner.
