Verdict

Stancombe Wills can beat his elders with the step up in trip in his favour against topweight Wing Collar, Border Tale and Silvertown. This is a tight little handicap on paper, but the three-year-old Stancomb Wills gets weight all round, so should make a bold bid. Mark Tompkin's charge appreciated the step up to a mile and a half when opening his account in a fast-ground Catterick maiden in May, and stuck to his task well in a Chester handicap at the end of last month. This extra two furlongs will be in his favour, and the Newmarket raider is the one to catch. Wing Collar failed to get going on his last visit here when down the field behind Valance and is another that will improve for the trip, but he has to give a stone to the selection. Border Tale was successful over hurdles at Aintree in May and was a close up third over 10 furlongs at Newcastle last month. He is fit and will like today's ground much more than when pulled up in heavy going in a Perth handicap hurdle last time, and can give the selection most to do. Silvertown will need this and should be noted back over hurdles, but he has won on the Flat here before and should give a good account at least. Stancomb Wills has lots more scope though and is the pick.
