In depth
Verdict
After a lengthy lay-off DOUBLE EAGLE looks well handicapped and is taken to score, while Nevsky Bridge could emerge as the leading danger. The selection has already won here over 2m 4f and did the same at Ayr on heavy ground in February 2008. He has not been seen since failing to complete in the Devon National a month after that, and while this trip may be a bit short, he acts on the ground and looks to have a few pounds in hand at the weights. Nevsky Bridge won't have any problems with the trip and acts with plenty of cut. He was in-form in the spring and is now 4lbs higher than when winning at Kelso, though his record when fresh is nothing to write home about. Star Tenor has raced only once on soft ground before and there have to be serious doubts that he will handle these conditions, and the mudlark Kempski, who also stays beyond this, looks a better proposition, despite top weight. Open De L'Isle is now back on a handy mark and acts on heavy going, and Bamby has conditions to suit and would not have to find much improvement to get very competitive. Double Eagle gets the verdict.
