Verdict

Some very classy hurdlers have landed this in recent times and Philip Hobbs has been particularly successful, saddling Rooster Booster, Detroit City and last year's winner Menorah to victory since the turn of the century. Pateese may not be in the same bracket as those but it was hard not to be impressed by last week's comfortable success at Sandown and his 5lb penalty is only half the amount he's due to be raised in the future. Richard Johnson's mount has to go close but THIRD INTENTION very much caught the eye when sixth to Brampour on his reappearance at Ascot. He goes well here and could reverse that form with the winner, second Via Galilei and third A Media Luz en route to landing this nice prize. Willie Mullins saddles the consistent Inspector Clouseau, while the hat-trick seeking Moon Dice and Jack Cool are other Irish challengers with fair claims. Abergavenny has won all three starts over hurdles but this is by far his toughest assignment to date and just as interesting is the versatile The Betchworth Kid.
