Verdict

It's more than a year since 2011 Hennessy winner Carruthers last ran under Rules and he's never won around here, though he has been successful between the flags recently. Join Together won at Wincanton and February but Pentiffic, third in this in 2014, gave him weight and a beating over 3m at Chepstow last month and probably left his effort too late when beaten by Vasco Du Mee in a top-class Ladies Open at Hereford subsequently. Night Alliance is unreliable and Hunters Lodge's form doesn't look strong enough but Mister Philson stays well, as does MAJOR MALARKEY. The latter made a bold bid to slip his field in the Foxhunters' Chase here last month and only weakened approaching the last. He got taken off his feet at Aintree subsequently but this is a much more suitable test and he can win the race for the second year running. Rookie trainer Jacqueline Coward won the Grimthorpe Gold Cup at Sheriff Hutton with One Conemare and the latter looks best of the rest.
