In depth

Verdict

Bally Sands sets the standard here but there are a few who could improve past him, of whom SOUTH LEINSTER rates the pick from Wayward Prince. Howard Johnson's inmate kept on for third behind a talented sort on his hurdling introduction, suggesting this step up to three miles would be of benefit. That performance backed up a solid second in bumper company and both runs suggest this gelding has the ability to take a race of this nature. Wayward Prince represents a yard going well and the form of his second on debut over timber reads well. Indeed, on a line through Tom George's Truckers Hall he's actually the one to beat and as that horse won stylishly on Friday plenty will side with the Ian Williams runner. It'll be interesting to see the market take shape, but at this stage we fancy the step up in trip will bring about more improvement from our pick. Bally Sands was well beaten at Taunton on Tuesday and looks opposable, despite the fact that some solid placed efforts make him the one to beat. He's rated 120, but our feeling is he'd struggle to win a handicap off that mark and he meets some likely improvers here. Penylan Star is one such sort and this son of Presenting merits attention on his hurdling debut. He took sixth in his sole bumper appearance but the winner of that race is a most promising type and it'd be no great surprise for this one to find the improvement required to score. Saddlers Mount was third behind a stablemate of our selection on his hurdling introduction but he was beaten a long way and will need to improve markedly on that form, so of more interest is Eros Moon from a thriving stable as this one is bred to improve for the step up in trip and switch to timber. The mare Basford Lady takes a big step up in trip on her second start over hurdles, having been pulled up on bottomless ground over two miles last time. On bumper form the Candlish runner would have claims but she comes with risks attached after that lacklustre effort and is opposable. Florarossa comes into a similar category having shown little promise on her switch to hurdles and with a lack of strength amongst the best this represents a decent opportunity for South Leinster, who is selected accordingly.
