In depth
Verdict
A very interesting race for future reference can go to Shannon Springs, who is selected over Monsoon Rain and North Shore out of those with previous experience, while Performing Arts, Spear Thistle and Sanchi are newcomers worth noting in the betting. The last two are stablemates that would not have much between them on jockey bookings. The latter, as a Derby entry, can be expected to need more time, while Spear Thistle is also bred to get a trip and may also be best watched this afternoon. Performing Arts has to be of interest, as he is one half of Peter Chapple-Hyam's possible hand for the Racing Post Trophy back here next month. There are plenty of winner in his family and a market move could be perilous to ignore. North Shore ran as if in need of the run on his debut and is entitled to have learnt from the run. However, his lack of fancy entries underlines that not a lot is expected of him this season. Godolphin have taken the easier option for Monsoon Rain, who could also have taken his chance in the previous race and that may also be a dangerous hint to ignore. He was swept aside by a useful type on his debut and should know a fair bit more this time around. However, Shannon Springs - a close up third in the Acomb Stakes last time - holds virtually all of them in terms of previous knowledge and, as that was an improved effort from his first start, this son of Dubai Millennium can do his bit to enhance Barry Hills' impressive strike-rate at this course.
