Verdict
With the top-rated horse, Bronzesmith, currently on a mark of 104 in this sphere, it is highly unlikely that any Cheltenham Festival contenders will emerge from this Beginners' Chase. So the betting market could be a good guide as to what is expected of some of the newcomers to fences. Christopher, Mickey Croke and Madam Flora all merit a second look on their hurdles form, but slender in the search for a fair price gives preference to Bunkum, who achieved the highest rating of this bunch over timber. The Richard Lee-trained eleven-year-old is a little long in the tooth to be switching to fences but he doesn't have too many miles on the clock and arrives here after a blow-out when outclassed behind Rhinestone Cowboy at Haydock last month. The selection will have benefited greatly from that run despite finishing tailed-off and can be expected to fare better for his introduction to chasing in this sort of company. Richard Lee has secured the services of the capable Tom Doyle for the ride, so with trip and ground also in his favour, Bunkum looks the one to side with for a sporting bet in, what in truth, is a little bit of a guessing game.
