Verdict

By far the day's biggest field, 15, contests the hunter chase, including last year's winner Sol Music, who lines up in form, having won easily at Leicester on his return to regulation fences at the start of the month. This sort of trip suits him more than three miles, and he was the subject of a steady gamble on course, which might have come unstuck at the second-last where he made a bad blunder. He got away with his hurdling style of jumping on that occasion, and luckily the rival who would have put that to the test here, Friar Waddon, has defected, leaving only Red Brook Lad to worry about. However, he would appreciate more cut than he will get here, and was beaten when falling behind subsequent Foxhunters winner Kingscliff at Wincanton. Bering Gifts has won on the Flat and over hurdles during his career, and at one time used to lead Paul Cole's Group horses on the gallops. Those days are long gone however, and it remains to be seen whether he can make his mark in this sphere. His introductory second at Fakenham suggests that he will, but not on this occasion.
