In depth

Verdict

Commitment Lecture was impressive when winning at Nottingham last week and is sure to have his supporters here under a six pound penalty, but on this slightly faster surface marginal preference goes to Calculaite. Geraldine Rees' gelding was a course and distance winner last month, having made all the running to score by a neck. On the face of it, he was then a shade disappointing when only fourth here the following week. However, Calculaite just raced a little too keenly on that occasion, and provided he settles a little better this time he is probably worth another chance off the same mark. Commitment Lecture was most impressive at Nottingham, when he scored by a convincing three lengths and it is no surprise to see him run under a penalty here. However, jockey Philip Makin has since lost his three pound allowance, so the horse is effectively running off a nine pounds higher mark. That, combined with the slightly faster surface, suggests it may just be worth taking him on. On The Wing hasn't been seen since fourth to Eden Rock at Goodwood in May, and although that looked like a good race at the time, the form has not really worked out too well subsequently. Pure Imagination and The Gaikwar look to be in the grip of the handicapper at present, but Sarraaf is in good heart and was a shade unlucky on his penultimate start when second at Catterick, so he merits the utmost respect, especially with the title-chasing Robert Winston in the saddle. Even with his pull in the weights, Foolish Groom is unlikely to reverse the form at Nottingham with Commitment Lecture, so we think this race all adds up to Calculaite.
