Verdict
European Dream can be hit and miss but he was very much a hit five days ago and can go in again under a 6lb penalty. Major Magpie and Future's Dream make up the shortlist. Richard Guest's enigmatic four-year-old won the Spring mile by a mile on his seasonal reappearance but was then disappointing the next two time. At Ripon on Sunday he cruised into the lead two from home and scored easily. If on song, it is doubtful that a 6lb penalty will be enough to stop him. Major Magpie tends to save his best runs for Pontefract but he bucked that trend with a win here over course and distance last month and should go close off this mark of 80. Macedon has been hitting the woodwork on recent runs and deserves to win sooner rather than later, whilst Ludovico won a claimer when last seen but will obviously need to step up once again for his new stable. Future's Dream has won over course and distance before but found himself outclassed in the Victoria Cup at Ascot. The extra furlong will help today and he cannot be written off. A tricky affair, and European Dream gets the nomination.
