In depth
Verdict
A wide open bumper rounds off the card and as usual in these types of events the market will be all important but the principals look to be Amalfi Storm, Rising Tempest and Topwell and the vote is given to Amalfi Storm. The selection showed enough in two races last year, notably when second behind Roita Bay, to suggest he can win a race of this nature and he need only run up to that mark to score. Rising Tempest is a well-bred sort from a stable that has a good record in these events and showed a modicum of ability on his debut and is sure to improve, so he should be closely monitored in the market. Topwell is a well bred gelding by Most Welcome and is another with place claims but his stable's record in bumpers is poor and he is passed over for that reason. Of the remainder, Laerts is another well-bred type that is worth noting in the market but jockey bookings suggest he is the owners second string and in a race where the market may well tell all, for the winner we return to the experienced Amalfi Storm.
