In depth

Verdict

Subpoena has been found a suitable opportunity to come good at last, with Barons Spy and Material Witness taken to chase him home. A York maiden winner for Michael Jarvis last year, Subpoena has yet to open his account for Godolphin but since having a visor fitted has shown improved form. He had Rob Roy behind when second to Elliot's World at Doncaster in September and should not be inconvenienced by this slight drop back in trip with the soft ground in his favour. He is at least 10lb clear of his rivals on official ratings, and it will be a major surprise if he cannot make the most of that here. The fact that his main rival appears to be the 57-rated Barons Spy says it all, and it should really be plain sailing for the selection. Barons Spy is still a maiden and was second in an apprentice race here at the start of the month, while Material Witness is a decent handicapper on his day but is a bit in and out these days. Subpoena has his best chance yet of returning to winning ways and should make the most of this gilt-edged opportunity.
