In depth
Verdict
Polar Bear looked a progressive performer last term and is taken to carry on where he left off and score at the main expense of Marshman and Taranaki. The selection made light work of his rivals in two handicaps last season, goes on a soft surface and an 8lb rise for the latest of those successes at Ayr, when beating Nashaab by two-and-a-half lengths, may not prevent him from completing the hat trick. Clive Brittain's Camp Commander has the assistance of Frankie Dettori for his reappearance but needs some help from the handicapper as does Paul Cole's Kool, if judged by his two outings so far this term. Manaar looked in need of the run on his return last month and should strip fitter today and of more interest could be Fiveoclock Express, who lost no caste in defeat behind Raphael at Thirsk last time. Taranaki has been in good form this season but may now be a shade high in the weights and a bigger threat to the selection may come from Marshman, who represents the in-form stable of Mark Tompkins. However, Polar Bear has an obvious chance if fit enough for his reappearance and gets the vote.
