Verdict
Dial Square gets the smallest of votes over Cromarty Bay, Pirouettes and Fulvio in the opener. This first race just about sums up the quality of Banded racing, but something still has to win and it is with no great confidence that we row in with Dial Square. Paul Howling's four-year-old is a three-time course and distance winner, and in addition has won twice here over 10 furlongs, most recently at the start of the month. His two subsequent efforts over that trip indicate that now is the time to put him back to a mile, and in a weak contest he should make his presence felt. Cromarty Bay has raced just three times, all on this track, but is taking a marked drop in distance. It remains to be seen whether she will show the necessary speed and and John Bridger's mare is opposed. Pirouettes finally came good at Wolverhampton in January and was a close third to Pheckless here a fortnight ago. That run entitles her to be considered for a place at least, but overall the claims of Dial Square are stronger.
