Nonrunner

In depth

Verdict

An interesting handicap in which at least half of the eight strong field make plenty of appeal. Sweet Lightning is the lucky recipient of our vote. Willie Muir's runner is taken to strike twice in the space of five days despite having to carry a penalty for his facile Chester success. This would appear to be a stronger contest but he's a progressive sort who will be racing from higher marks in the future and he's worth chancing. Downhiller seems to have reached a plateau and may need to drop a few pounds but Ballochroy is undoubtedly better than he was able to show at Chester. West With The Wind is another that failed to handle the track last time and this galloping circuit should enable Tom Tate's highly regarded charge to show his true colours. First Avenue races from the same mark as when filling third behind Conduit at Epsom on Derby day and should stay this far; he could be leniently treated. Casilda is progressing well but may be biting off more than she can chew in this company but Monterrico is very interesting as he was backed off the boards prior to his latest start and he's expected to prove a good bit better than his current mark. This is a race to savour but Sweet Lightning has fairly solid claims.
