In depth

HARVARD MAN made a winning start over 5f here last month when bursting clear a good way from home and just hanging on. Jimmy Fortune takes over the reins today and will likely hang on to him a bit longer over today's extra distance. Brian Meehan's colt had Sixth Sense a length behind on that occasion and connections of the latter will fancy his chances of reversing the form having subsequently won easily at Pontefract. He is preferred to stablemates Riflescope and Beaverbrook but Doncaster winner Birchwood can also figure with Ryan Moore on board today. Handytalk never threatened at Ascot despite finishing second while jockey bookings suggest Shalaa is preferred to the more expensive purchase Eltezam.

Beaverbrook 8-1 (9-5) Led and disputed, ridden to lead over 1f out, headed and outpaced inside final furlong, no chance with winner, 2nd of 9, 2 3/4l behind Steady Pace (9-5) at Ascot 5f 2yo mdn (3) gf.

Birchwood (IRE) 10-11fav (9-5) Slowly into stride, chased leaders, driven to challenge over 1f out, led inside final furlong, ran on well, won at Doncaster 5f 2yo mdn (5) gf beating Secret Ambition (9-5) by 3/4l, 6 ran.

Handytalk (IRE) 7-1 (9-1) Close up in rear, pushed along halfway, ridden and headway entering final furlong, kept on to go 2nd towards finish, no threat to winner, 2nd of 6, 4 1/2l behind Log Out Island (8-11) at Ascot 5f 2yo stks (2) gf in Apr.

Harvard Man 7-1 (9-5) Dwelt, tracked leader, led over 1f out, just held on, won at Newbury 5f 2yo mdn (4) gf in Apr beating Ring Of Truth (9-0) by shd, 10 ran.

Riflescope (IRE) 6-1 (9-5) Made all, ridden and ran on, won at Lingfield 5f 2yo mdn (4) gd beating Strong Challenge (9-5) by 1 3/4l, 6 ran.
