Verdict

A big field for this bumper where the usual rules apply with regard to the market and trainers who do well in this sphere, and MIDNIGHT PRAYER gets the nod, while Uncle Ant, Yukon Quest and Captain Hastings are all respected. The selection was runner-up in a similar contest here last month, when the ground was also described as soft. The form of that race looks pretty strong in the context of this contest, and he can build on that experience with success this time. Stablemate Yukon Quest is also likely to be well prepared and is related to numerous winners under rules. This is a good starting point and despite his apparent second string status he may still be the one to chase home his Barbury Castle companion. Captain Hastings is another related to winners under rules, although not such an illustrious family, and he will be well prepared by Nick Gifford, who does not have a bad record in this sort of race, so a market check is strongly advised. Robin De Vassy also has a decent pedigree for a race like this and Martin Keighley is enjoying a very good campaign, so with Tom Scudamore booked we could see a good run first up from the French-bred runner. Paul Webber has also done well in these events over the years, so with Denis O'Regan up, Uncle Aunt, who should act well on soft ground if pedigree is any guide, can get involved. Midnight Prayer is the one to beat and gets our vote.
