In depth
Verdict
Colonel Cotton is not straightforward and will need to be sharper from the stalls than he was at York last Friday, but he does still have the ability to take a race like this and is given one more chance to prove himself. Ryedane and Henry Hall are others with leading claims, while Divine Spirit is also capable but has been a touch below par in his last couple of starts and looks to be struggling with the handicapper at present. Henry Hall loves fast ground and, having gone close at Haydock earlier in the month, has proved that he still has the capability to figure in this company. A market move will be interesting where he is concerned. Ryedane made the most of an attractive mark to score at Catterick a fortnight ago and also has to be respected in his current frame of mind. The minimum trip is not a problem for him and a bold bid is anticipated. However, Colonel Cotton is absolutely thrown in from his present rating of just 71 and, with Richard Fahey's team in flying form at present, we are prepared to give this old rogue another throw of the dice at this level.
