Verdict
Some real speedsters turn out here, with Polar Way selected to beat Royal Millennium, The Tatling, Stormont and Country Reel. The latter, winner of last year's Gimcrack at York for David Loder, has only raced twice in the Godolphin silks, first worn when he was beaten a head by Orientor at Newcastle. Subsequently down the field behind Somnus in Listed company at Newbury, he meets The Tatling who was ahead in third, on worse terms, so so should theoretically be held by Milton Bradley's star. However, you just never know how much a Godolphin inmate is likely to improve for one reason or another, and he is one to keep on the right side of. Royal Millennium was fifth in the Ayr Gold Cup and has been unlucky since, notably when headed inside the final furlong in Group 1 company at Longchamp. If there had been more cut in the ground, he would have been something to bet on, but with conditions still on the fast side, Polar Way is taken to step up on his excellent second to Acclamation in the Group 2 Diadem Stakes at Ascot three weeks ago. Only lightly raced, (nine career outings), Amanda Perrett's four-year-old looks to have a bright future and is the pick in a cracking renewal.
