Verdict
The feature event of the night and an interesting line-up for this years renewal with the majority potentially listed class on what we have seen up to now. Whether we have a McCartney in the field remains to be seen, last years winner going onto Champagne Stakes success at Doncaster but on what we have seen to date and for the long term, DERBAAS is arguably the most exciting colt of the eight runners. Ed Dunlop's charge holds entries in the majority of leading juvenile contests later this season and on what he has displayed he is a worthy recipient of those entries. A very promising fourth in what is normally a hot maiden at the Newmarket July festival, he stepped up on that to win at Ascot, the front two drawing a long way clear. He did show signs of thinking about the job on hand, flashing his tail and drifting in the closing stages but these are early days to be questioning his attitude and he looks a colt to keep on the right side of for now. Doctor Crane was quickly turned out last time following an impressive Newbury victory on his penultimate start. He recieved a soft lead at Newbury and the differing circumstances could well have unsettled him at Ascot when he was taken on for the lead. On what he had displayed before, he is better than the form of that Ascot event.
