In depth

Verdict

Swaffham Bulbeck didn’t beat much at Fakenham in April and has been absent since a beaten favourite at Worcester the following month. Nevendon has been in good form on the Flat at Bath since a third at Newton Abbot in July while Pillar Of Steel followed up a third at Market Rasen behind Adamaris, who runs in the previous race, with a win at Stratford. However, Lunar Shadow was travelling strongly when unseating his rider three out that day and has since won on the Flat. Rain-softened ground was to blame for HURRICANE ALI’s poor run at Cartmel two runs ago. He’s generally been running well off this sort of mark and is due a change of luck. Nibras Gold isn’t out of this but has been beaten off lower marks the last twice.

Formwatch

Hurricane Ali (IRE) 5-1 (11-10) Held up, closed on leaders before 5th, pushed along to go second after 2 out, every chance when upsides and bumped rival on landing after last, ridden and no extra when dropped to third inside final 50 yards, 3rd of 9, 1 1/4l behind Aliomaana (10-6) at Stratford 2m hcp (3) gd in Jul.

Swaffham Bulbeck (IRE) 16-5fav (11-9) Prominent, mistake 2nd, jumped left 7th, not fluent 4 out, switched right before last, weakened flat, 5th of 11, 7 3/4l behind Raffle Ticket (11-10) at Worcester 2m hcp (3) gd in May.

Pillar Of Steel 9-2 (11-10) Mid-division, went 4th home turn, pushed along approaching last, ridden and stayed on to lead narrowly run-in, always doing enough, won at Stratford 2m hcp (4) gd in Aug beating Pop The Champagne (11-8) by 1l, 7 ran.

Lunar Shadow 5-1 (9-9) Held up in mid-division, good headway out wide over 1f out, stayed on inside final furlong, led final 100 yards, eased near finish, won at Bath 1m 5f hcp (6) gs in Aug beating Beggarman (9-9) by 3/4l, 10 ran.
