In depth

Verdict

A terrible advert for National Hunt racing heads up the card and Tim Vaughan's PENYFAN DAWN might just be good enough to emerge the winner, while Split The Wind and Consulate could make their presence felt. The selection may benefit from a change of tactics, having been held up in his last couple of starts and finding little after looking like taking home some prize money. The minimum trip and fast ground suit and it will be interesting to see if Richard Johnson is tempted to try to make all, which in a weak contest may well be the answer. Split The Wind stayed on reasonably well when third here, beaten over 20 lengths, in a novices' contest last time. Fast ground is no problem and the mare can probably have a say in the outcome of this event thin on quality. Consulate has his first run for a new yard after heading east from Ireland and the change of scenery might have freshened him up. Flat form suggests he should be a shoo-in here, but his maiden hurdle effort at Killarney last time was not hugely promising and the jury is out. Evan Williams saddles both Give Me A Chance and Sion Cwilt and though neither has shown much of anything so far, money for one of them would be interesting. Not a race to dwell on then and Penyfan Dawn is the suggestion.
