In depth
Verdict
An interesting beginners' chase with the shortlist containing Rowley Hill and Tighten Your Belt, but the vote goes to Mount Clerigo. Dual bumper and hurdle winner Mount Clerigo is an interesting recruit to the chasing ranks, having achieved a rating of 129 over the smaller obstacles, his victories including a track success. Sent off as favourite for a valuable hurdle on his return, it was no disgrace to finish fourth to the well-handicapped Standin Obligation. Fitness, therefore, will not be an issue and he looks set to go well. Rowley Hill got up to a mark of 120 over hurdles by virtue of winning three on the bounce and he gets a very good mention. The best of Simon's Irish form affords him some thought, while Supreme Toss has won four of her five career starts, including once here, so is respected, although she has a long absence to overcome, as does the very useful Tighten Your Belt, who has not been seen since a very good seventh in the 2004 Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle. Finally, Eskimo Pie chased home the well-regarded Wild Cane Ridge on his chasing debut, showing good promise in the process, so is respected too. As we say, it all adds up to a very good event, with the vote given to Mount Clerigo.
