Verdict
In a competitive handicap, MONS CALPE can complete the hat trick at the main expense of Demeanour and Highland River. A winner of a Kempton nursery in November, Highland River has shaped creditably this season in good handicaps, far from disgraced in a hot event on Derby Day. Dropped 3lbs here, he can go well at a big price. Ed Dunlop has an excellent strike rate just now, and Demeanour was only just run out of it in the closing stages last time, having been well supported on her Lingfield re-appearance. She showed ability as a juvenile at the top tracks and looks a threat. After a couple of pipe openers, Mons Calpe justified support and the long haul to Beverley, following up in game style at Bath recently. This gelded son of Rock of Gibraltar is 5lbs higher, which is a little harsh, but Mons Calpe, who would like the ground to be on the fast side of good, is the selection to shrug off that climb in the weights.
