        Verdict

        Castlerea Tess took a hike in the weights after scoring over 6f here in January and has been well beaten since. Caledonia Laird slid down the handicap last year and is now back on a winning mark but Evanescent has done all his winning on the Turf so far and never looked like catching the winner when runner-up at Lingfield recently. TAVENER (NAP) failed to figure at Catterick last week but scored over track and trip before that. He can effectively race off a lower mark today with the 7lb allowance of the useful apprentice, Finley Marsh, taken into account and should go close back on this surface.
