In depth
Verdict
St Ivian gets the call over the likes of Roman Quintet, Riquewihr and Old Bailey. A fairly competitive affair on paper can see St Ivian improve enough to land the spoils. Norma Macauley's charge beat Larky's Lob off a mark of 63 here last December but has failed to trouble the judge since. Having his first outing for over three months when sent to Southwell a fortnight ago, he did not get the best of luck in running, but finished third over an inadequate five furlongs. The step back up in trip should help, and although this race is a bit tougher, he is not badly handicapped and can pay to follow. Roman Quintet has had the misfortune to finish second on each of his last four starts, and no matter whether held up or attempting to make all, just cannot get his head in front. He is not ungenuine though, and looks a big danger. The lightly raced Riquewihr pays his first visit here and may benefit from the longer trip, while Old Bailey has form over the course and distance and comes from a yard that does well here. We return to St Ivian as the answer to a trappy contest.
