Hull KR ended St Helens' five-match winning run with a thrilling 24-22 victory at New Craven Park on Sunday.
The Robins kept their Super League play-off hopes alive with a fourth successive home win over Saints in a nail-biting encounter that saw the lead change hands a number of times.
Two tries from Blake Green plus scores by Sam Latus and Craig Hall and four goals from Michael Dobson kept the hosts just a point behind eighth-placed neighbours Hull FC with two matches to go.
St Helens ran in tries through Jamie Foster, who scored twice, Matty Ashurst and Lee Gaskell, but Foster remained one kick behind Dobson on three.
The first try came early on, when Saints were awarded a penalty for a high tackle after stand-off Leon Pryce dropped the ball over the line in the opening minutes.
The visitors shifted the ball quickly left to Francis Meli, who sent Foster over for his first, but Rovers struck back when Michael Dobson put Green across after collecting a return pass from Liam Watts.
Crucial
Dobson then set up the next try, booting a 40-20 kick for winger Latus to chase down and score.
St Helens regained the lead midway through the half when substitute Matty Ashurst Dixon pounced on Jonny Lomax's superb grubber to touch down and Foster added the extras.
Rovers were soon back in front however when Dobson ran the ball on the last tackle and Green burst over for his second.
But three minutes before half-time the visitors hit-back as Foster claimed his second to take his side into the break level pegging with their hosts.
Dobson nudged his side back in front nine minutes into the second half with a penalty, before firing a high kick that saw left winger Hall out-jump Armstrong and touch down for the try.
Dobson's conversion attempt bounced back off an upright to leave the hosts with a six-point lead, but he stretched the gap on 67 minutes with a second penalty to make it 24-16
Saints added a fourth try after the hooter from substitute Lee Gaskell and Foster booted his third goal, leaving Dobson's crucial penalty the deciding factor between the teams.
