Racing Metro claimed bragging rights over French rivals Clermont with a 16-9 Pool 2 victory in the Heineken Cup.
There was little to choose between the sides but Fijian winger Sereli Bobo's try just before the interval proved the difference between them.
A first-half kicking dual between Racing's Jonathan Wisniewski and Clermont's Gavin Williams resulted in the teams being locked at 6-6.
But when Bobo crossed on 38 minutes Wisniewski converted to give the hosts a 13-6 lead at the break.
It was nearly 20 minutes into the second half before the next points were scored and again it was the boot of Wisniewski, who pushed his side further ahead with a penalty.
Replacement Morgan Parra got a late penalty for the visitors to claim a vital losing bonus point.
The result means both sides have registered one win from their first two matches of the campaign.
