Johanna Konta through to last eight of the Monterrey Open

British No 1 makes it two wins in as many matches and will now meet Russian teenager Anastasia Potapova for a place in the semi-finals

Johanna Konta booked her place in the last eight of the Monterrey Open with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 victory over Tatjana Maria on Thursday.

The Brit, who kicked off the week with a straight-sets win against Kim Clijsters, had 10 break points without converting a single one on her way to a first-set tie-break against her German opponent.

The second seed eventually edged in front and a single break of serve in the second set was enough to wrap up the match in an hour and 47 minutes.

Konta will now meet Russian teenager Anastasia Potapova in the quarter-finals after the 18-year-old beat Tamara Zidansek 1-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-1.

There were also wins for Elina Svitolina and Arantxa Rus.

Top seed Sofia Kenin was on the brink of defeat but overcame qualifier Jaqueline Cristian to toil to reach the quarter-finals of the Lyon Open.

Australian Open champion Kenin was a set and a break down against the Romanian world No 174 but forced a deciding set with two quick breaks.

The third set was also a tussle, Cristian blinking first as she was broken for 5-3, but Kenin also dropping a game as she served for the match before the American finally won 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-4.

She will go on to face Oceane Dodin who had a walkover against Jil Belen Teichmann, while second seed Kristina Mladenovic was dispatched in straight sets by Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-3 6-3.

Seventh seed Daria Kasatkina beat Irina Maria Bara 6-3 6-2 and Viktoria Kuzmova defeated Tereza Martincova 6-4 4-6 6-4.
