Cetkovska brushed aside; Goerges claims Kuznetsova scalp

Jelena Jankovic sealed her progress to the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships with a 6-2 6-2 victory over Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic. The Serbian world number 14 took just one hour and 13 minutes to complete the win, and will now take on Flavia Pennetta of Italy after she beat Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-3 6-3 despite posting a weaker first serve percentage than her opponent (48% to 59%). Two-time grand slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova was knocked out by Germany's Julia Goerges in a match which lasted two hours and 15 minutes. The Russian won the first set 6-2 but Goerges edged a second-set tie-break and went on to win the match 2-6 7-6 (7/2) 6-4. In earlier matches, Russia's Maria Kirilenko claimed a comfortable 6-3 6-0 victory over Monica Niculescu, with Kirilenko next due to face the winner of the first-round encounter between seventh seed Francesca Schiavone and Ana Ivanovic. Israel's Shahar Peer beat Fatma Al Nabhani of Oman 6-3 6-1.
