Young blanked in final set

Frenchman Jeremy Chardy will face third-seeded compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round of the Toronto Masters after defeating Donald Young 3-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-0. The first match of the post-Olympic tournament marked Young's 16th consecutive defeat, the American not having claimed a victory on the ATP since last February. It took Chardy, ranked 47th, over two hours to get past number 84 Young to earn his 16th win of the season. Chardy said: "It will be tough to play against Jo, he's been doing so well recently. He's a good friend of mine. I can only go out and try to play my game."

Aces

Chardy racked up seven aces but also six double-faults in his win over Young and broke six times on his way to the next round. Due to the Olympics finishing in London this weekend, all 16 seeds in the field have been given first-round byes. The final is also scheduled to take place on Sunday evening so as not to clash with the Games' closing ceremony. But numerous players have pulled out the tournament, including world number one Roger Federer who was beaten by Andy Murray on Sunday, and the injured Rafael Nadal. Officials will be hoping Olympic gold medallist Murray and beaten semi-finalist Novak Djokovic will honour their commitments to play in the tournament. Chardy has lost his only previous meeting with Tsonga in Johannesburg in 2009.
