Wimbledon 2014: World No 1 Serena Williams confirmed as top seed for women's draw
Wednesday 18 June 2014 17:09, UK
Serena Williams will be the women’s top seed when the Wimbledon Championships begin on Monday.
Unlike the men’s seedings, which take into account recent performances during grasscourt tournaments, the women’s seeding directly follows the WTA world rankings.
China's Li Na is seeded second, with Simona Halep of Romania third and Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska fourth.
French Open champion Maria Sharapova, who won the Wimbledon singles title 10 years ago, is next in the seedings ahead of 2011 winner Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic.
Jelena Jankovic is seventh, two-time semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka eighth and a strong top 10 is completed by Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who advanced as far as the last four in 2012, and Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.
