Former Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis is making a comeback to the ATP Tour at the age of 38 – nine years after injury forced him to retire.
The Australian, who lost to Roger Federer in the 2003 Wimbledon final, has been handed a wildcard to the qualifying draw at next month’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island, where he won his last career title in 2006.
Philippoussis had a catalogue of knee injuries in the latter stages of his playing career. But he has appeared on the Champions Tour a number of times in recent years.
His booming serve earned him the nickname ‘Scud’ and he reached No 8 in the world rankings. He also reached the 1998 US Open final where he was beaten by fellow Aussie Pat Rafter. He won 11 ATP Tour titles.
