Venus and Serena record straight sets victories

The Williams sister progressed through to the second round of the Australian Open after straight sets victories. Second seed Serena Williams looked comfortable as she toppled China's Yuan Meng 6-3 6-2, while Venus was made to work hard for her 6-3 6-3 win over Angelique Kerber. Serena won the title at Melbourne Park in 2007 and she needed 75 minutes to reach the next stage. Yuan struggled to stay with Williams in the first set, having to save two break points on her first serve before finally succumbing in the fourth game. The second set saw the 27-year-old storm into a 4-0 lead before closing out the set and the match. Kerber put up more of a fight against Venus, despite a stuttering start. Venus had stormed into a 5-0 lead, and looked on course for victory in double-quick time. However the German held her serve and then broke Williams to spark a mini-comeback. She then saved several set points to hold her serve again. Williams, though, quelled the comeback as she had her own serve to take the set. Kerber broke Williams early in the second set to move into a 3-1 win, however the sixth-seeded American broke back immediately and then moved through the gears to seal the victory.
