Northampton have signed defender George Smith from National League side Gateshead for an undisclosed fee.
Smith, 20, who began his career at Barnsley, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal.
"For a young player he has a good deal of experience under his belt already," said Cobblers boss Justin Edinburgh.
"He has performed well in League One before, we think he is a very good player with a bright future ahead of him. He is someone who will only improve further and we are delighted he will be joining us."
Smith made 86 first-team appearances for Barnsley before being released last summer and featured for Gateshead 38 times this season.
