Sky Sports understands that Newcastle are hoping to agree a deal for Pierre-Michel Lasogga this week, but their attempts to sign Bafetimbi Gomis have again hit the buffers over the player’s wage demands.

Newcastle first made enquiries for Lasogga before the end of his season and they have met with his mother, who also acts as the 22-year-old's advisor.

Lasogga spent last season on loan at Hamburg from Hertha Berlin and helped them avoid relegation.

The striker and his mother met with Hertha general manager Michael Preetz last week and he admitted that Lasogga has three options - either stay with the Berlin club, return to Hamburg or join Newcastle.

Preetz is quoted by Bild as saying: “It is only about three clubs; Hertha, Hamburg or Newcastle.”

Lasogga, who has been called into Germany's senior squad in recent months, is now considering his options and is already understood to have visited Tyneside to view Newcastle's training ground and stadium.

Newcastle hope they can persuade him to make the move to the North East, but one player unlikely to making the switch is French striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

The 28-year-old - a long-term target of Newcastle - has been in talks about a move to St James' Park and it appeared he was finally set to agreee terms, shunning interest from rivals Premier League clubs and also Turkey.

However, Sky sources have confirmed that once agian there is an issue with the player's wage demands and that talks have now hit an impasse.
