Former Sunderland striker Roy O'Donovan admits moving to Brunei was one of the best decisions of his career as he weighs up his future.

O'Donovan joined Brunei club DPMM FC last February as the club's marquee player for the 2014 season after deciding to leave the UK for a new adventure.

The 29-year-old always considered the idea of playing abroad at some point in his career but never thought he would end up in Asia.

However, O'Donovan has no regrets about making the move into the relative unknown as he has revitalised himself at DPMM FC under the stewardship of former Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean.

O'Donovan, who signed a one-year deal at DPMM, has scored 23 goals in 28 appearances for the club and his form has put him in the running for the player of the season in the Singapore S League as well as attracting the interest of clubs in the UK.

DPMM are keen to extend O'Donovan's stay at the club and the forward is weighing up all the options available to him after enjoying a successful debut campaign in Brunei.

"Things are going very well and I think I was right in making the decision to come out here to Asia," O'Donovan told Sky Sports.

"In my last year at Northampton I had a lot of injuries, but since I have been at DPMM I have been injury free and enjoyed a really consistent season and played in my favourite position just behind the striker.

"I have always thought about playing abroad and I thought it would be in somewhere like Australia or America, but when the chance to move to Brunei came about it was something I believed I should give a go.

"It has been a unique experience and it has opened my eyes to everything - the style of football and the culture of the people here - and the people have been fantastic to me."

Turning his attention to his future, O'Donovan has refused to rule out extending his stay with DPMM as clubs from England and Scotland keep tabs on his situation.

It is nice that the club want me to sign a new deal, but I am not closing any doors on anything as it is a short career. I will assess all options open to me before making a firm decision on my future.

"I signed a one-year deal when I joined and the coach has mentioned to me about signing a new contract," added O'Donovan.

"It is nice that the club want me to sign a new deal, but I am not closing any doors on anything as it is a short career.

"I will assess all options open to me before making a firm decision on my future."

O'Donovan also hailed the influence of manager Kean, who like the Irishman has been rebuilding his career in Brunei after finding himself a figure of ridicule during his time in charge at Blackburn Rovers.

"Steve's appointment at the club played a big part in my decision to make the move to DPMM," noted O'Donovan.

"Steve is a top manager and I think he has proved that in the success he has had here.

"He has really changed the fortunes of the club since he arrived and he is enjoying his role out here after a very difficult time at Blackburn, but he has moved on from all that now."
