Commonwealth Games: Rhythmic gymnast Francesca Jones win Wales' first gold medal in Glasgow

Wales' wait for a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games finally came to an end when Francesca Jones took the individual ribbon title in rhythmic gymnastics.

The 23-year-old is retiring from professional competition after the Games and bows out with one gold and five silvers, winning three on Saturday morning to go alongside two won earlier on.

Jones was anxiously left waiting on the outcome of an enquiry by Patricia Bezzoubenko - the Canadian who pipped her to gold in the all-round and team events, as well as in the hoop, ball and clubs finals on Saturday.

Fortune smiled on her, though, as the appeal was ignored and she got the ended she wanted and in the process earned Wales' first-ever rhythmic gold at the Games.

"I could never even imagine that one. I thought, 'I'm going to dance my heart out as if it's the last routine of my life',” Jones said.

England success

There was more gold for England as Zoe Smith got the better of Welsh veteran Michaela Breeze to win the women's 58kg weightlifting in Glasgow.

Smith trailed Breeze by just 1kg after the snatch part of the competition in which the Commonwealth Games record was broken three times.

But after Breeze failed at 113kgs in the clean and jerk, Smith responded with a mighty 115kg to cement her gold medal position. She set a new Games record with a final lift of 118kg for a total of 210kg with Nigeria's Ndidi Winifred taking silver and Breeze bronze.

England shooter Michael Gault made Commonwealth Games history when he won bronze in the men's 10-metre air pistol event.

The 60-year-old from Norfolk, competing in his sixth Games, equalled the record for Commonwealth medals in any sport by bagging his 18th podium place.

But Gault was upstaged somewhat when David Luckman and Parag Patel won gold in the Queen's Prize pairs, securing England's first shooting gold in the process.
